Jamie, a 10-year-old who identifies as female, presents to the ER with her mother with a ‘sore arm’. Jamie received a mosquito bite five days ago, which was pruritic. This morning, Jamie experienced pain in her arm. Her mother noted the arm was red, swollen and painful. The symptoms were increasing in severity during the day so the mother brought the child in for medical assessment. Clinic registration was completed and the nurse is notified that the child and parent are in the waiting room.
