Developing Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Competencies Through Virtual Simulation Games

GAME 1 – CONCUSSION IN A PEDIATRIC PATIENT

This virtual simulation game for the primary care nurse practitioner (NP) focuses on the assessment and management of concussion in a pediatric patient.

A child is hit in the head by a ball at school during recess. the child’s mother brings them in to see the NP in the urgent after-hours clinic.

GAME 2 – HEALTH PROMOTION

In Game 2 after completing a community assessment, reviewing the Food Security Report from the city Social Planning and Research Council, and meeting with the Community Partners Roundtable, the Public Health Nursing Team meets to discuss health promotion strategies and evaluation.

GAME 3 – PROGRAM PLANNING AND EVALUATION

In Game 3 the PHNs work with the Community Partners Roundtable to develop a food security program using a program planning tool that includes evaluation. The program planning is informed by a logic model commonly used by public health nurses in practice to develop a program to promote food security in the community.
