This is a high-fidelity simulation scenario of a 70-year-old male who had undergone total right hip arthroplasty yesterday and had spent an uneventful night after surgery. Today is patient’s post-op day 1 and his vital signs are stable. His post-op morning blood work shows low Hgb of 76. Two units of packed red blood cells transfusion are ordered by physician. Consent form for blood transfusion has been signed prior to surgery. The learners are expected to safely initiate a blood transfusion according to protocol, monitor vital signs, recognize signs & symptoms of transfusion reaction, stop the blood, notify physician utilizing SBAR communication and administer IV Benadryl.
